Most people who plan a trip to Virginia Beach put the boardwalk at the top of their list – and for good reason. The boardwalk buzzes with ocean views, live music, bikes and rollerblades zipping past, and more ice cream stands than you could try in one weekend. But if you walk just a few streets inland, or drive a few minutes farther down the coast, a completely different side of the city opens. If you’ve booked a timeshare as your home base, then you’re already set with a home-like base. Now, let’s discover areas of Virginia Beach that most tourists never even hear about until they’re on their way back home. 1. Chesapeake Bay – Chic’s Beach Serenity To folks who live here, Chic’s Beach isn’t a secret at all – it’s the place to catch a low-key evening after work or a lazy Sunday afternoon. Unlike the Atlantic side, the water in the bay is calm, barely rolling in with gentle waves that are perfect for paddleboarding or floating aimlessly. Stay long enough and you’ll see the sky turn lavender and gold, while dolphins occasionally play in the distance. Afterwards, pop into one of the little bayfront restaurants for fried shrimp or fish tacos – nothing fancy, but always fresh. Aim for a weekday visit. You’ll share the sand with locals walking their dogs rather than crowds of sunbathers. 2. The Narrows at First Landing State Park Inside First Landing State Park, most people set up at the usual beaches or head straight for the hiking trails. If you move toward The Narrows, though, you’ll find a tucked-away waterway. It is shaded by mossy trees and lined with marsh grass. Bring or rent a kayak, and you can paddle slowly along the still water while herons pick their way across the shoreline. If you continue all the way to Broad Bay, it feels like you’ve stumbled onto your own private picnic spot even though you’re just minutes from town. 3. Back Bay National Wildlife Refuge & False Cape State Park If your idea of escape means leaving pavement behind, head to Back Bay National Wildlife Refuge. Here, boardwalks take you through marshes where migratory birds shriek and swoop. Moreover, sandy dunes shift with the wind. Beyond the refuge lies False Cape State Park, reachable only by hiking, biking, or paddling in. Because cars can’t reach it, the long stretch of beach stays beach-blanket empty, and on some days your footprints might be the only ones in sight. Just remember that there are no shops here, so pack water, snacks, and a sense of adventure. 4. A Pause at the Edgar Cayce Center Not every getaway moment has to involve sand. Tucked into town is the Association for Research and Enlightenment, created by Edgar Cayce, sometimes called “the sleeping prophet.” Whether you’re fascinated by meditation and holistic healing or just curious about why this place exists in the first place, the center is worth a stop. The garden is peaceful, the library is unusual, and even skeptics tend to settle into the quiet atmosphere for a little breather from the beach buzz. 5. The Centuries-Old Thoroughgood House Ask any history buff, and “The Thoroughgood House” is one of the first names that pops up. Built around 1680, this brick home is a rare survivor from early colonial Virginia. Tours offer details about the tough realities of early settlers. And, the garden paths outside are meant for a slow meander. The story doesn’t stop here; Virginia Beach also keeps up other landmarks such as the Francis Land House and Lynnhaven House, rounding out the picture of what life looked like across different eras. 6. Family Fun at Hunt Club Farm If you’ve got kids (or you’re just a kid at heart), Hunt Club Farm is about as wholesome as it gets. The petting zoo is always a hit, and the TreeWalk Adventure gives kids a chance to scramble across rope bridges just above the ground. The farm leans into the seasons, too, as you can witness pumpkin patches and hayrides in the fall, butterfly gardens in spring, and plenty of outdoor fun in summer. It’s a refreshing swap from packed arcades or crowded boardwalk attractions. 7. Drinks With a View at Sky Bar Sure, this one technically overlooks the main strip. However, the vibe is completely different when you’re perched high above it. Sky Bar, atop the Hilton Virginia Beach Oceanfront, is where you go not for people-watching but for horizon-gazing. From up here, there’s nothing but sea blending into sky until the sun sinks. Come early for romantic sunset cocktails, or stop by later when the city sparkles with light. 8. Local Eats Off Atlantic Avenue For a taste of Virginia Beach that doesn’t come with a neon sign or long line of flip-flops, skip off Atlantic Avenue and head to neighborhoods like Hilltop and Shore Drive. Favorites include:
9. The ViBe Creative District Another pleasant surprise is the ViBe Creative District, just a short walk inland but alive with color and energy. Building walls double as art canvases, indie shops display handmade goods, and cozy coffee spots hum with conversation. If you’re in town on a Saturday morning, the Old Beach Farmers Market is here too, where you can fill a tote with produce, bread, or pastries to carry to the beach for a picnic. 10. Adventureworks Zipline Park Not all fun in Virginia Beach happens on the water. Head over to Adventureworks Zipline Park. Here, you’ll be clipping into a harness, zipping over tree lines, and crossing rope challenges high above the forest floor. It’s an adrenaline shot that balances out the leisurely pace of lazy beach days. Ready to Unlock the Secrets Beyond the Boardwalk? The boardwalk is indeed iconic. If that’s all you see here, you’ll miss the layers that make Virginia Beach more than a resort town. By taking time to explore, you get stories and memories that most visitors won’t even realize they missed. And when you sit back at your timeshare at the end of the day, you’ll know you’ve seen the authentic side of Virginia Beach.
